Belfast, ME — A new show at Waterfall Arts, “Midcoast UMVA Juried Winter Exhibition,” will be on view from Wednesday, January 25th to February 24th, 2023.  Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday, 10am to 4pm and Saturday from 10am to 3pm.

An opening reception will take place on Friday, January 27, from 5pm to 7pm.  The reception and exhibition are free and open to the public.

The exhibition will feature works chosen from submissions by members of the Midcoast Union of Maine Visual Artists (UMVA) – ranging from photography to painting to monoprints and mixed media work.

The judge for the show is David Estey, a well-known Maine abstract-expressionist painter whose work has been featured in 24 solo shows and in more than 100 group and juried exhibits.

“At the outset, we had decided I should be as inclusive as possible, to support submitting artists and encourage participation in the new UMVA Midcoast chapter,” said Estey. “Judging by the digital submissions, the resulting exhibit should be a surprisingly wide and perhaps little-known spectrum of esthetics, styles and artistic expression being created in the Midcoast area.”

The Midcoast UMVA Juried Winter Exhibition is the culmination of work undertaken in 2022 to relaunch the Midcoast Chapter of UMVA, after many years of dormancy. Additional shows are tentatively scheduled to take place in Waldoboro and Damariscotta later this year.

About the Union of Maine Visual Artists and Midcoast UMVA

The Union of Maine Visual Artists (UMVA) represents visual artists statewide in all fields of endeavor and welcomes those who support contemporary artists in Maine. The UMVA is dedicated to upholding the dignity of artists, while creating positive social change through the arts. By collaborating with other cultural and progressive organizations, UMVA raises awareness for significant issues while promoting an inclusive arts community in Maine.

The Midcoast chapter of UMVA was formed when artists Liv Kristin Robinson, Sally Stanton, Ann Tracy and Deb Vendetti — who took turns traveling to Portland to carry work to exhibits — discussed the possibility of re-forming a Midcoast chapter of UMVA. From 2003 to 2008, the Midcoast UMVA chapter had been vibrant and active with monthly meetings, guest speakers and group exhibition opportunities in the Midcoast and beyond. After an internet survey of the UMVA members showed there was great interest in a Midcoast community, the chapter began to take shape. Click here to find Midcoast UMVA on Facebook.
