Printmaking

The Kennedy Press is our traditional printmaking studio. Create work alongside other printmakers working in a variety of techniques and traditions, including intaglio, relief, and monotype.

The Kennedy Press is equipped with three etching presses (60″ x 38″ Conrad, 22″x50″ Dickerson Combo, 24″ x 45″ Brand), ferric etch bath, brayers, hot plate, and large drying rack. The studio is notably a “green” studio. We aim to use the safest current practices with as little toxins as possible (such as using chemicals that are solvent-free). Our studio monitors are happy to provide training on how to incorporate these methods into your working style.

Printmaking Classes

Our classes are small and intimate with only 8 spots per session. If a class is full, please join the waitlist or sign up for our newsletter below to receive new class announcements. For more information, please contact us via phone or email.

Printmaking Community Studio Hours

Community Studios are for folks who have a working knowledge of the medium or who are currently enrolled in or have previously taken a class, either at Waterfall Arts or in another clay studio. There is no formal instruction during these hours, simply time to practice the medium and make work independently.

Adult Community Studio fees are $25 per three-hour session or $15 for students currently enrolled in a Printmaking Class at Waterfall Arts.

Community Studios are monitored by skilled volunteers who are there to assist but not teach. Thank you Waterfall Arts volunteers! If you don’t yet feel confident working self-sufficiently in the studio, consider taking one of our classes or signing up for an orientation session.

Chip’s Portfolio

Chip Barchilon

Studio Co-Manager Chip Barchilon is an interdisciplinary artist living and working on the unceded territory of the Wabanaki Confederacy. Their work explores layered histories of place, drawing on fairy tales, rhizomatic theory, and deep ecology. Through bioplastic sculpture and works on paper, Barchilon creates evocative, ambiguous visual narratives.

Ross’ Portfolio

Ross Dener

Ross Dener is a printmaker and co-manager of The Kennedy Press at Waterfall Arts, as well as a teaching artist at Haystack School of Craft. He earned his BFA in Printmaking from Purchase College, SUNY, in 2019. In addition to his studio practice, Dener enjoys fishing, ice hockey, and race cars.

Annika’s Portfolio

Annika Earley

Annika Earley is a Belfast, Maine–based artist whose intimate works on paper explore motherhood, sensuality, gender, and pre-teen nostalgia through the lens of her alter-ego “Batshit.” Drawing inspiration from German fairy and folk tales, Spice Girls lyrics, and personal mythology, her work blends humor, vulnerability, and fantasy. Earley holds degrees from Maine College of Art and College of the Atlantic, and has exhibited nationally, including at Field Projects in New York.

Become a Studio Subscriber

Artists can apply to have 24/7 access to the studios at Waterfall Arts (other than class time). Cost-saving subscription rates are available for $100/month plus a one time $25 refundable key deposit. Application approval and an orientation session are required.

Subscribers have access to a wide variety of tools and materials, including cutting tools (linoleum, wood, and etching), plexiglass pallets/plates, paper soaking and etching trays, hard and soft etching grounds, oil and water-based etching inks, eco-friendly ground remover, eco-friendly cleansers, and rags.

Additional materials such as paper, copper plates, and woodcutting blocks are available to purchase.
