Ceramics
Our clay studio supports handbuilding and wheel throwing. Artist subscribers can run their own firings or arrange firings with studio staff.
The Ceramics Studio is equipped with five electric wheels, three kilns (Large Sitter Skutt, Medium Bailey, Small Paragon), a Brent SRC Slab Roller, and a clay Reclamation Station.
Our studio is designed to support a general white clay body. Tools and equipment are available for your use with this clay body. Artists are required to provide their own tools, slip buckets, and clay drying equipment if working in a different clay body.

Ceramics Classes

Our classes are small and intimate with only 6 spots per session. If a class is full, please join the waitlist or sign up for our newsletter below to receive new class announcements. For more information, please contact us via phone or email.

Ceramics Community Studio Hours
Community Studios are for folks who have a working knowledge of the medium or who are currently enrolled in or have previously taken a class, either at Waterfall Arts or in another clay studio. There is no formal instruction during these hours, simply time to practice the medium and make work independently.

Current Schedule
Adult Community Studio fees are $25 per three-hour session or $15 for students currently enrolled in a Clay Class at Waterfall Arts. Wednesday Kid’s Session is $15 per child for a 90 minute session.
Community Studios are monitored by skilled volunteers who are there to assist but not teach. Thank you Waterfall Arts volunteers! If you don’t yet feel confident working self-sufficiently in the studio, consider taking one of our classes or signing up for an orientation session.

Meet Our Ceramics Instructors

Our ceramics instructors are practicing artists and dedicated educators who help sustain a welcoming, skill-building studio environment. Through classes, open studio support, and community programming, they guide makers at every level while actively contributing to the creative life of the Ceramics Studio.

Linda Stec
Studio Manager Linda Stec has been teaching clay at Waterfall Arts for over a decade. She has a degree in Fine Arts and has taken many masters level classes. Along with clay, Linda has been a performing puppeteer for 18 years and practices calligraphy, cartooning, and weaving. She is a master gardener and the Director of the Starrett Childrens’ Center.
Chandra Elmendorf
“I make art in celebration of the gifts the Earth offers us constantly, and as a practice of deepening my relationships with myself, other people, and the more than human world.”
Chandra Elmendorf is a ceramics artist and educator living in Northport Maine. Her work is primarily functional and handbuilt. Formative encounters with clay in the studio began early in her life. From the ages of 7 to 11 she attended weekly ceramics classes at a community studio, learning many of her foundational skills there. After that, it wasn’t till the final semester of her BFA from Whitworth University in Spokane Washington, that she encountered clay again, re-kindling a love that had almost been forgotten. Later still, in 2015, after another hiatus, the time for that long-burning ember to kindle a flame had finally come. The opportunity to attend classes at the Clay Arts Guild of the Hamptons in Watermill, NY stoked that fire. She has been joyfully working in clay ever since,
Her practice follows a meandering path, trying on new techniques, or returning to standbys, but always exploring ways of bringing the all-pervasive vitality of Nature into the work. Leaves, bark, rocks, soils and shells all provide inspiration and are often used as tools, themselves collaborating in the creation of the pieces.
Carol Herwig
Carol Herwig began making pottery for the table since 1983. What began as a diversion during her career as a journalist has become an integral part of her life as she works with clay and teaches others to do so, too. Her work as an arborist and gardener also informs her wheel-thrown bowls, mugs, vases and teapots.

Dirk Warren
Dirk Warren grew up in South Berwick and Bangor, Maine. After graduating from Bangor High School, he continued on to college and graduate school before joining the U.S. Navy, where he served for 27 years. Much of his military career was spent traveling and living overseas.
While stationed in Okinawa, Japan, Dirk visited local potters and observed traditional Okinawan carving techniques and outdoor climbing kiln firings. During his time in Sicily, Italy, he was inspired by the vibrant colors and motifs of the historic ceramic steps of Caltagirone. Now retired in Belfast, Dirk creates ceramic work influenced by the forms, surfaces, and traditions encountered throughout his travels.
