A Serendipitous Connection: Liz & David Albertson

Here’s a little inside info: we thrive on meeting you. Nothing lights us up more than hearing your stories and seeing how the art you create with us moves through the world.
It’s especially meaningful when your experience with Waterfall Arts inspires you to spread the word. Your advocacy helps us grow, improve, and dream even bigger.
Recently, we had the honor of sitting down with an inspiring couple, Liz and David Albertson. After hearing that Liz had been singing our praises, we just had to learn more about their story—and what made their time with us so memorable.
Everyone who walks through our doors brings something special. Their stories enrich this creative community we’re all cultivating together.
Both David and Liz are surgeons, so we know their hand-eye coordination must help with their creations! Liz describes herself as “a surgeon who’s always been a fiber artist.” Taught to sew at a young age by her mom, she fondly remembers birthday trips to the fabric store to pick out patterns and make clothing—sometimes even three-piece suits! These days, she still upcycles beautiful thrifted cashmere into reloved ponchos.
Liz first discovered Waterfall Arts five years ago—by chance! She was driving past the building, decided to wander in, explored the art spaces, and immediately signed up for our newsletter (which she still loves reading every week).
Her first class? A winter ceramics course in 2023. “I just needed a pick-me-up,” she said. It was there she met ceramics guru Chandra Elmendorf, in an open studio. Liz was finishing a handmade casserole dish for her husband, David, who proudly still uses it. (Chandra has a handbuilding class coming up, hint hint, Sign up HERE!)
That spring, she invited David to join her for Glassblowing I with Brian—and they still use their creation as a snack bowl! We love that it’s being used in such a fun, practical way. They had such an amazing time, they brought a friend along for another glass class—this time, a Fused Glass workshop with Sharon. (Sharon has a few classes coming up this fall! Jewelry, Drawing, Fused!) David showed us the piece he made in that class: a beautiful glass portrait of their sailboat, Waxwing.

This past summer, Liz brought a friend to a Crafts & Drafts event at Marshall Wharf Brewing Co., where they took our Sea Shell Decoupage workshop. That’s where Liz met Amy Tingle, Program Director, and absolutely glowed with excitement and positivity about Waterfall Arts. When Amy came back to the office, she said, “You HAVE to meet this woman.” (We’re so glad we did.)
Just last week, both Liz and David took another one of our classes—Chris Pinchbeck’s Making Better Photos with Our Phone Cameras, where David was used as a subject during the natural light portion of the class. 😉
Both Liz and David spoke about how everyone they’ve met at Waterfall Arts radiates passion. “Brian is the epitome of enthusiasm,” they shared. “The classes are well-structured, and you get hands-on so quickly. They provide a little safety net to explore your creativity.”
They also celebrated the range of people they meet in every class. “We drive in from Camden, and we’re always surrounded by folks from all over the Midcoast—not just Belfast. It shows just how far your reach really is.”
