Darkroom Photography

Our darkroom is a fully outfitted, multi-use space for those working in analog photography.

To learn more about the studio, inquire about a subscription, or to schedule an orientation, please email info@waterfallarts.org or by phone 207-338-2222.

The Photography Darkroom is equipped for analog photography, developing black and white film and print 35mm to 4×5 negatives with four enlargers, a jobo for color film development, a UV box, contact frames, trays galore, film tanks, racks, and more. Our darkroom is also equipped for printmakers to develop their silkscreens.

Some chemistry is available for purchase during open studio hours. All alternative process chemistry requires prior authorization from staff before use in the darkroom.

Open Studio Hours*

The studios at Waterfall Arts all have weekly Open Studio hours. Open Studio fees are $20 per three-hour session. We recommend that interested artists confirm studio hours and reserve a space in Open Studio in advance, as space is limited.

To reserve a space and for more information, you can email us at info@waterfallarts.org or call us at 207-338-2222.

*Open studios are currently on hold due to COVID-19. Experienced ceramicists are welcome to consider a monthly subscription to access the studio.

Studio Monitors

Heads up! Open Studios are monitored by skilled volunteers who are there to assist but not teach. Thank you Waterfall Arts volunteers! If you don’t yet feel confident working self-sufficiently in the studio, consider taking one of our classes or sign up for an orientation session. Open Studio monitors may close the studio after the first hour, if there are no participants.

Studio Subscriptions

Artists can apply to have 24/7 access to the studios at Waterfall Arts (other than class time). Cost-saving subscription rates are available for $75/month plus a one time $50 refundable key deposit. Application approval and an orientation session are required.

Studio Orientations

Studio orientations include a comprehensive review of the studio space, safety protocol, equipment and available resources. Prospective subscribers must attend a studio orientation and be approved by the Studio Manager, before initiating a monthly subscription. Those interested in attending Open Studio hours are also recommended to attend a studio orientation.
