Ekphrastic poetry is poetry written in response to another art form. We will examine different approaches to writing about a work of art and study some examples of ekphrastic poems and the techniques used. Participants will then explore the current photographic show at Waterfall Arts, choose a work that appeals to them, and take notes in preparation for writing a poem. We will then return to the workshop and each participant will complete a poem with the support of the instructor. At the end of the workshop, those who choose to can share their poem.

Join Belfast historian, Megan Pinette, for a stroll along Belfast’s waterfront. Learn about industries along the harbor in the early years of settlement. Did you know there was a rum distillery making what was described as “bad stuff but good rum?” And, what we now refer to as Puddle Dock was also known as Dock Square or Sandy Beach? The tour will continue with highlights from the days of the ship building businesses to the age of steam when the Belfast and Moosehead Lake Railroad transformed the waterfront into an industrial manufacturing zone.
Many effects can be achieved in monotypes that are not possible with any other printing technique. In gelatin monoprinting a jelly-like material (homemade or store bought) is used as the printing plate. The soft surface of the gelatin plate is ideal for capturing fine details. Participants will play with color, templates, and mark making to build a layers of imagery to produce one of a kind artwork.
Come swap stories about your own experience with the Belfast Waterfront, while referencing and remembering history as told through the exhibition Photographing Belfast's Waterfront: Then & Now.
