What is started in Color Theory I continues and expands in this 8 week class. Artists study color structure (harmonic relationships), composition, and application of paint, expanding the palette, finding color balance within the work, and analyzing a work as it develops. In addition, the mechanics and methodology of the painting process - different types of brushes, preparing a substrate, making paint, using extenders, adjusting for canvas size, how to put the paint onto canvas selectively and deliberately are addressed. Instead of the week-to-week assignments of Color Theory I, in this course, artists work on developing a series of small paintings that brings color issues into discussion fluidly and quickly in the weekly critiques. Previous experience of Color Theory I recommended.

In addition to the in-class lessons, assignments issued each week will be completed at home. Attention is paid to identifying what we see in terms of color, interpreting information and translating observation into a mix, learning color interaction, handling paint. In the beginning we focus on the essentials that establish a foundation for moving on to more advanced work. Later, as the course progresses there will be occasion to put these essentials into practice as we paint directly from observation. Weekly critique provides opportunity to clarify concepts and discuss whatever’s going on in the group. All are welcome - no previous experience needed. This course benefits anyone with an interest in color - pastel artists, watercolorists, designers, photographers, painters, sculptors, fiber artists, ceramicists.

The themes of landscape, architecture, and/or natural forms will be our starting points. Printmaking is a very exciting medium, not always predictable, but usually highly rewarding. You’ll learn a range of different techniques, including collagraphic, simple intaglio, and monoprinting. The workshop will guide you through each process and you’ll be given time to explore each one. Both water-based and oil-based printing inks will be used. The collage portion of the course is designed to help you explore how to imply depth and form by using the variety of work created on the first day of the workshop. The collage day will focus on learning the art of simplification, the importance of shape and line, and how to use a scalpel blade, scissors, or tearing to ‘draw’.
