Introduction to Copper Etching

February 15, 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM
Waterfall Arts Belfast, 256 High Street
Belfast, 04915 United States
$75

Etching is a type of printing process that uses acid or mordant to cut into the unprotected parts of a metal surface to create a design in intaglio (incised) in the metal. In this workshop a copper plate will be etched using ferric chloride. Although etching is commonly considered a process of using acid to bite the metal, ferric chloride is actually a corrosive salt and much easier and safer to work with. Participants will explore all stages of the etching process from preparing the plate, applying grounds for etching, engraving and etching techniques, and finally inking and printing the etched plate. All levels welcomed.

Drawing is a skill that can be taught and learned. It's never too late to learn! This class will introduce you to the concepts and visual perceptions that are the basic foundation of realistic/representational drawing in a relaxed and supportive environment. Through guided projects and exercises participants will explore issues of line, tonality, form, and how these issues inter-relate. Absolutely no experience necessary or expected. Material list will be provided.
