Using Japanese and Korean papers and techniques, join us to learn a variety of methods to create paper sculpture. We will explore ancient processes such as Momigami (Japanse kneaded paper, Joomchi (Korean paper felting), and flax paper making. Karen will share her process of sculpting ethereal forms incorporating fibers and handmade elements. This is a process-oriented class encouraging experimentation and discovery. Materials are included in class fee, but please feel free to bring your favorite papers or fibers to include in your work.
About the Instructor
Karen Olson is a lens-based artist working at the intersection of human emotion and the natural world. In her figurative and nature-inspired work, Karen uses concept-based projects to explore the human/nature connection and its role in subjects such as grief, trauma, empathy, and forest bathing. She illustrates these multi-sensory experiences with two and three-dimensional works in photography and paper sculpture. Karen’s exhibition The Embrace opens in the Clifford Gallery at Waterfall Arts on Friday June 3, 2022.
