Making Images: Photography Workshop

Saturdays, January 8 – February 5, 2022

This class is intended for students with little to no experience in digital photography, or for those who would like to continue their formal practice in the medium. The goal of this class is to make photography feel fun and accessible, while encouraging an active process of art making. The 5-week session will begin at Waterfall Arts with two hours of in-person instruction. During this time, students will be taught the foundational, technical elements of photography, as well as be advised on how to use their own, unique cameras. The following 4 weeks will consist of a weekly, 2-hour Zoom call where students will share and discuss the images they made, ask any questions that may have come up while they were working, as well as be introduced to the work of contemporary photographers. Each week, prompts will be given in order to encourage students to approach making their work in a new, unique way.

About the instructor:

Matthias Mann is a photographer and writer whose work has been continually inspired by the beauty of rural New England. Growing up in Maine, a love of exploration has featured prominently in his practice, with much of his work drawing off of the natural beauty of small, overlooked scenes. His work often dwells in the slow, meditative process, with many of his images featuring a quiet perspective bordering on minimalism. As an artist, Matthias has exhibited his work in galleries across New England, with much of his fine-art practice focusing on the construction of narrative within images. He is also a TA at Maine Media Workshops and a photography teacher at the Ecology Learning Center.
