Introduction to Copper Etching

February 15, 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM

Etching is a type of printing process that uses acid or mordant to cut into the unprotected parts of a metal surface to create a design in intaglio (incised) in the metal. In this workshop a copper plate will be etched using ferric chloride. Although etching is commonly considered a process of using acid to bite the metal, ferric chloride is actually a corrosive salt and much easier and safer to work with. Participants will explore all stages of the etching process from preparing the plate, applying grounds for etching, engraving and etching techniques, and finally inking and printing the etched plate. All levels welcomed.

Maryfaith Morison hails from the west coast where she was primarily known as a metalsmith, apprenticing under Stieg Gusterman ( Georgetown, CO.) and Thomas Schlicting (Amsterdam). Using acid etch in many processes she continued to explore this medium, resulting in attending S.F. Art Institute, studying printmaking under the tutelage of Michi Itami. While in SF Maryfaith also worked out of U.C. Berkeley Open Studio and Fort Mason Print Department. Upon arrival in mid-coast Maine Maryfaith shelved printmaking for a time until she became aware of Waterfall Arts’ printmaking studio. Since then she has been consistently enthralled and engaged with printmaking, primarily working with copper plate intaglio etching with use of embossment and chine colle.
