This class is intended for students who already have an understanding of the basic technical elements of a camera, such as Shutter Speed, F-stop, and ISO. During the Zoom calls, we will talk about various theories of photography regarding how photographs construct visual narratives, view work by both contemporary and past photographers, as well as take time to look at and discuss student work made between our classes. During in-person sessions, students will be given an optional assignment to guide their image making, with close to an hour to complete it. During these in-person sessions, Matthias will be available to answer any questions that might arise. The goal of this class is to provide a space for students to be able to create their own work, while beginning to develop their eye for image making.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR: Matthias Mann is a photographer and writer whose work has been continually inspired by the beauty of rural New England. Growing up in Maine, a love of exploration has featured prominently in his practice, with much of his work drawing off of the natural beauty of small, overlooked scenes. Through this, his work often dwells in the slow, meditative process that his work takes on, with many of his images featuring a quiet perspective bordering on minimalism. As an artist, Matthias has exhibited his work in galleries across New England, with much of his fine-art practice focusing on the construction of narrative within images.
