with Matthias Mann
Held Online (Zoom) on SATURDAYS: January 9th, 16th, 23rd, and 30th 2021

Held In-Person at Park on Main Street in Belfast on SUNDAYS: January 10th, 17th, 24th, and 31st 2021
11:00 AM – 12:00 PM
This class is intended for students who already have an understanding of the basic technical elements of a camera, such as Shutter Speed, F-stop, and ISO. During our zoom calls we will talk about various theories of photography regarding how photographs construct visual narratives, view work by both contemporary and past photographers, as well as take time to look at and discuss student work made between our classes. During our in-person sessions, students will be given a rough assignment, with close to an hour to complete it. As our class wraps up, we will meet briefly to discuss how it went and talk about any technical challenges that arose. The goal of this class is to provide a space for students to be able to create their own work, while beginning to develop their eye for image making.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:
Matthias Mann is a photographer and writer whose work has been continually inspired by the beauty of rural New England. Growing up in Maine, a love of exploration has featured prominently in his practice, with much of his work drawing off of the natural beauty of small, overlooked scenes. Through this, his work often dwells in the slow, meditative process that his work takes on, with many of his images featuring a quiet perspective bordering on minimalism. As an artist, Matthias has exhibited his work in galleries across New England, with much of his fine-art practice focusing on the construction of narrative within images.
NOTE ABOUT THE CLASS: Sunday sessions of this program will meet at “Park on Main” in downtown Belfast. This small park is located on Main Street, across from Dockside Restaurant. The group will gather outside in the park for discussion, and then disperse throughout Heritage Park along the waterfront, to take photographs. Public bathrooms are located near this location. Wear walking shoes and a mask; bring drinking water. Masks are required during instruction and social distancing will be maintained throughout the program.
A digital camera is necessary to participate in this program. You should also have access to a device that you can use to join the Saturday Zoom calls.
