An event every week that begins at 11:00 AM on Friday, repeating until April 17, 2020
This class moves sequentially through a series of exercises that demonstrate the behavior of color in certain conditions, as the painter learns to identify color relationships. In addition to the in-class lessons, assignments issued each week will be completed at home. Attention is paid to identifying what we see in terms of color, interpreting information and translating observation into a mix, learning color interaction, handling paint. In the beginning we focus on the essentials that establish a foundation for moving on to more advanced work. Later, as the course progresses there will be occasion to put these essentials into practice as we paint directly from observation. Weekly critique provides opportunity to clarify concepts and discuss whatever’s going on in the group. All are welcome – no previous experience needed. This course benefits anyone with an interest in color – pastel artists, watercolorists, designers, photographers, painters, sculptors, fiber artists, ceramicists.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR: In her work, Kris Engman explores various subjects, materials and genres as a painter of the Maine landscape. Most recently, she has exhibited at the Arden Gallery in Boston, the Schmidtberger Fine Arts Gallery in Pennsylvania, The Geras Tousignant Gallery in San Francisco and the Courthouse Gallery in Ellsworth. Kris received her MFA from the University of Pennsylvania and her BFA from the Maine College of Art. Although Engman’s artistic focus was as a sculptor for twenty-five years, for more than 15 years, she has painted the Maine landscape and worked from, what she defines as, ‘the ‘simplest of still lifes’. The work is an expression of color and pattern in some sort of balance that feels connected to daily routines and observations. From her Belfast studio, Kris teaches workshops in collaboration with Waterfall Arts in Color Theory at all levels and Basic Drawing. These workshops are run as well through River Arts in Damariscotta and in the Master Series at The Engine in Biddeford. She also teaches drawing, design and painting in the University of Maine Art Department.
