All classes held over Zoom

6:00 PM – 7:30 PM
$85 general / $77 members

Considered by some as being the purest form of photography, this class forces students to rethink how they see things. B&W photography is about texture, tonal values and light. This class will help students see more in this way, as they immerse themselves in the art of B&W photography. We will learn how to set your camera to shoot in B&W, how it differs from color photography, and how to maximize the potential of the format as well as best practices to capture images. Part of the class will cover how to maximize your image after capture in post processing — to help elevate your images and present them as you envision.

Equipment required:

Students should have a device that allows them to connect to Zoom, in order to participate in the group lessons and discussions. This course is designed for people who have DSLR or mirrorless cameras, or any point and shoot camera that can adjust shutter speed, aperture & ISO. If using a cellphone camera: to gain the most from the classes it is suggested that you have the ability to control shutter speed, aperture and ISO either through the default camera app or additional app if necessary.

Thom Williams is a photographic artist based out of the Troy, NY area. After picking up a camera in elementary school during the age of film, he continued his creative journey at SUNY Oswego, graduating with a BFA degree in photography. Being a full-time commercial/fine art photographer as well as teaching an extensive list of classes keeps him completely in his element of constant exploration and immersion in the art form he loves so much. Although he has taken the past year off from gallery shows to focus more on instructing at several art centers, he is looking forward to bringing a fresh new look to his offerings in the coming year. He believes that there is nothing better than helping someone find their artistic voice — and frankly many times you learn a lot about yourself in the process.
