Cantastoria workshop with Bread & Puppet Theater!
April 26@5:30 pm - 8:30 pm$45
“Cantastoria” is a street theater form championed by Bread and Puppet Theater that involves the performance of pictures through the use of song, movement, text, and puppetry. The word “canta-storia” comes from Italian (sung story), though the form has its roots in India ca. 600 AD and has flourished in various guises all over Europe and Asia (from Japan (etoki & kamishibai) to Germany (bankelsang) for the last 1,500 years. If puppetry can be said to activate all the objects whose expressive potential lies dormant as a result of the “realistic” aspirations & conventions of actors’ theater, Cantastoria is the region of puppetry that focuses on activating the elements of actors’ theater that lie fallow under the names “the backdrop,” “the set,” or “the curtain.”
Don’t miss Bread & Puppet’s performance of the Basic ByeBye Show on Friday, April 27. More info and purchase tickets here!

In this three hour workshop Bread and Puppet’s company will perform a B&P Cantastoria for the group, teach two other Bread and Puppet Cantastorias to the group, which the group will then perform for each other, and then put these experiences of watching and performing Cantastorias to work toward making our own Cantastorias in small groups. Bread and Puppet finds Cantastoria to be an extremely effective tool for activist street performance and loves to share it widely and encourage people to take it up.
