Sculpture: Portraits in Clay

Participants will learn how to sculpt a half size portrait working from a model and/or from photographs. We will make studies of each feature, learn proportions and how to measure the relationship between the height and the width of the head and how to locate the features on the clay. We will study all the different view of the portrait such as profile, front, back and how it constitute a whole.The material will be provided.Bring a spray bottle, an old fabric to wrap the clay between sessions, a large plastic bag to cover it, and a sketchbook.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR: Hilbert’s major work consists of sculpture for public space. “Talma”, a 7-foot bronze sculpture is installed in the public square of the Theatre of the Valley of L’Yerres, in Brunoy, France. A pair of 4-foot bronze relief sculptures entitled ”The Calling” is installed at the Georgetown University Medical School building in Washington DC. Her artistic education began at the age of seven, when she was taught by her grandfather, the late artist, Jaro Hilbert. From him, she received a thorough education in the classical tradition. She continued her formal studies at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux Arts de Paris, France, at The Academy of Art of The Newington Cropsey Foundation, Hastings on Hudson, NY and at The Art Students League of New York. She was awarded an Edward G. McDowell Travel Grant from the Art Students League of New York in 2002.
