Using a few simple tools of geometry and plenty of imagination, this class will teach participants to compose and paint intricate and unique mandalas. Working with gouache, a vibrant opaque watercolor, we will go over brush handling techniques, color mixing, blending, layering, patterning and the use of personal iconography.

March 10, 17, & 24
Saturdays, 10:00AM – 1:00PM
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR: Mango Johnstone began drawing and painting before she could speak. It would be nice to say her art is inspired by lofty ideals, but really it is more of a compulsion built into her nature. Her mandalas are free form energy transmissions. She began painting them during a period of convalescence in 2006. They fall somewhere between intense doodling and her professional experience restoring Tibetan thangkas, which include mandalas and other intricate patterning. Her figurative oil paintings are a space and practice which allow her to express experiences she could not otherwise articulate. She has been engaged in this work throughout her career and these paintings are closest to her heart. After practicing these two very different kinds of paintings concurrently, but separately for many years, her current work is beginning to reflect a merging of the two. She continues to paint to honor the memory of her mentor and late husband, artist Magnus Johnstone.
