This workshop is an introduction to gilding with metal leaf – gold/ imitation gold/variegated leaf/ copper and aluminum – it’s a materials and methods mini-course instructing in the use of the easier, oil-size method as well as the more complicated, but dazzling, water-gilding. You will learn how to prepare surfaces, make gesso, apply metal leaf, and burnish to illuminate the gold. Traditional formulas and practices will be the foundation of our contemporary application. A weekend of great fun and skill-building.
Registration fee includes a basic kit for the workshop, which includes some basic metal leaf. Gold leaf will be available to purchase by the sheet during class.

Kris received her MFA from the University of Pennsylvania and her BFA from the Maine College of Art. Although Engman’s artistic focus was as a sculptor for twenty-five years, for more than 15 years, she has painted the Maine landscape and worked from, what she defines as, ‘the ‘simplest of still lifes’.
