AR GIRLS: Summer Intensive
August 5-16, Monday-Friday
for girls ages 12-16
Participation requires additional meetings in the fall leading up to a culminating community event
AR Girls is a NSF funded research project designed to support teenage girls with an interest in art to develop science communication skills through digital interactive art. Working with project partners from the University of Maryland, Harvard Graduate School of Education, University of Oregon and the University of Wisconsin, MMSA will design a program for 16 girls ages 12-16 to create an Augmented Reality (AR) place-based tour about a science topic relevant to the local community. The experience will be designed using the ARIS software. The pilot program began summer of 2018 right here at Waterfall Arts.
What do the AR Girls do:
The program begins with a 2-week summer intensive and continues through the fall with weekly meetings when the girls will plan a showcase of their AR experience, then continue to meet and practice ways to take their new skills and connections out into the world, as design professionals would do in their careers. This project aims to identify and explore ways to support teen girls’ interest in science, and open new career pathways.
The program consists of:
2-week daylong summer workshop (*see below for dates in your region) and is followed by
Two virtual meetings, and two in-person meetings each month in September and October
Community showcase event in the Fall (plus a celebratory day together)
This program is FREE! No previous experience required!
All Girls ages 12-16 are welcome!
